B vitamins may reduce the risk of stroke

Posted 7 years ago by Jacob in General Health News

A large meta-analysis involving 47,921 people has revealed that supplementation of B vitamins may reduce the risk of stroke. B vitamins are believed to reduce levels of homocysteine in the blood, an amino acid reported to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD).

The data taken from 19 different studies showed that B vitamin supplementation was associated with significant reduction in homocysteine levels, and a 12% reduction in the risk of stroke, compared with placebo, but no differences were observed for other cardiovascular outcomes.

This new meta-analysis, published in the journal of Clinical Nutrition, represents the "most recent information available on the associations between B vitamins supplementations and risk of CVD", said researchers from Zhejiang University in China, the National Health Research Institutes in Taiwan, and Monash University in Australia.
